Forget the Amazon Kindle – Buy the iPhone

by MikeFook on August 4, 2011

I hate Apple. I despise their stupid proprietary system that blocks me from even figuring out how to load my own mp3′s and videos to the iPhone. That said, I don’t care that much at the moment because it does some other things EXTREMELY well.

Take the speed of this little manx.

I’ve not seen a computer this fast. Really, not joking. It does what I finger it to do – instantly. No questions, no hesitation. It is better than I ever could have guessed by watching Youtube reviews of it. You can’t see on a video just how lightly you need to touch the display for it to work – perfectly every time. It’s an absolute joy to behold. Electronics that are slow – drive me batty. I’ve no complaints at all about the speed or responsiveness of this little devil.

What does it do?

I’ll have to make a video. Videos can show what it can do, though not the ease at which it does it.

I’ve said, since the beginning of time – FORGET the iPhone and iPod, FORGET the iPad. They all suck. Just get a Kindle reader for books. The reading experience on the epaper of the Kindle is the best. I am still 100% on that belief.

But, guess what? I’m backpedaling on the idea that anyone needs one in it’s present form. This phone is smaller – fits in a pocket. It’s something like 154 grams. The battery lasts more than one day. On a new phone – I bought mine used, you can get days of use. In fact, when the new iPhone 5 comes out – I’m sure you’ll be choking even more hours out of it.

The Kindle is a great reading experience – but what else can you do with it? Instant weather? Youtube? Online radio? Take decent photos and videos? I have even stopped carrying around an extra camera when I go places I’m not likely to see anything great – and just take the iPhone. I have the free application (app) for the Kindle reader. So, I can read all my Amazon books on my iPhone. But, I can see the photos in COLOR. Quite a change from the black and white view a Kindle gives.

As an ereader, the iPhone is just about perfect. It is not too small as I would have insisted it was before owning one. I laughed at people that told me they read ebooks on their iPhone. HA! You do WHAT? Get yourself a real reader Bozo!

Not anymore. The screen on this iPhone is incredibly sharp and bright. The auto-brightness function works eerily well – whether I’m in bed at night or in bright sunlight. The screen isn’t affected by bright sunlight because when you turn it to the side – away from it – bang, you can see crystal clearly again. I have mine set at half brightness – and it adjusts automatically when necessary.

The photos are very clear. The focusing for video is unbelievable – you just tap a new subject as you pan around while shooting – and it focuses on that – drawing a rectangle to tell you it is doing what you instructed it to do. The videos are a big step up from my 3MP Nokia phone I used prior to this. This iPhone also only has a 3MP camera. Those Nokia videos were BARELY acceptable for Youtube uploads. The iPhone video is easily twice as good in both color replication and details.

I could go on and on. Oh, and I didn’t mention- I’m talking about the old iPhone – the iPhone 3GS. I don’t even have the iPhone 4 and it already does everything I need it for. I’ll make a video and post it here in a day or so. I need the other camera to make it and wifey is running around town with it – shooting Baby Girl.

Forget the Kindle. You don’t need an ebook reader as big as a book to carry around. Get an old iPhone, or a new one. It was well worth the $400 I paid for this factory unlocked one here in Thailand. No need to jailbreak it – everything worked and I upgraded to the latest iPhone operating system (OS) without any problem at all.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget – like I sometimes do – it’s a phone. The sound is crystal clear. One more bonus – the phone charger is smaller than any Nokia charger I’ve ever seen. It’s about twice as big as a standard die (dice is 2, right?).

I can’t believe I put off looking at the iPhone in person for so long before getting one. I had seen my wife’s nephew’s iPhone 4. I wasn’t impressed at the time. He had a lot of junk apps that didn’t mean anything to me.

It’s the BASICS that impress with this phone. Go have a look at either the old iPhone 3GS or the new iPhone 4. Or, wait until the iPhone 5 comes out in October. I’m sure you can’t go wrong with any of them.
